Hello Ms. Balck,

I'm currently team teaching a global social work class at Calvin College. We are trying to show students that even those who work domestically address global issues. In an effort to highlight some of the social service providers locally as well as to help our students understand the importance of being global citizens, we have them create poster presentations for class. Through this project, students (in pairs) were asked to go to agencies or talk to the agency contact over the phone to learn more about local agencies with a global focus. The requirements follow:

In groups of two or three, identify a social welfare organization (preferably in West Michigan) that works with a global focus and schedule an interview with one of its staff members. In this interview learn about the history of the organization, its mission and major goals, staffing, services that are provided, greatest opportunities and challenges. Prepare a creative and informative poster presentation for the class.

This semester we have 38 students so we will most likely do groups of 3. Last semester, the results were really spectacular--the posters were creative and informative as were the presentations. It was a great opportunity for students to learn what organizations existed and the services they provided.

I was wondering if you would consider meeting with a team of students to talk about your program and the work that you do at Justice for Our Neighbors(or if you could suggest others who may be willing to do this). I imagine that the interviews would last approximately 30 minutes so it shouldn't be a large time commitment for you.

Please let me know if you would be willing to help out with this project and if so, what contact information I should give to my students. Thank you for your consideration!

Sincerely,

Kristen Admiraal

Hi Liz, One more note--I'm excited about Margaret Regan coming to Grand Rapids. "The Death of Josseline" was read and discussed by a book club in my congregation last Spring. I met Margaret at the Unitarian Universalist General Assembly in June. Her book was published by Beacon Press, the UU press. Reading that book was the genesis of doing this social justice forum for 9/25! thanks, Lynda

Hi Liz, I spoke with you by phone today about the Social Justice Forum All Souls Church is holding 9/25 from 1-3:30pm. I met with Anna Waller of the Dioces of GR today (she is speaking at our 11am worship service). Anna told me about the Lemkin House and I got a list os friends and supporters from Lemdin's website. This seems like a pretty complete list. Do you have a specific individuals we should contact at Cooley Law, Christian Reformed Office of Social Justice, Temple Emanuel or the Islamic Center of W MI to let them know about the Social Justice Forum. Ryan Bates is the key note speaker and it should be a good venue for networking and collaborating about any vigils, witness, actions, etc that can be done in Grand Rapids. Lastly, can I drop off some flyers to you about the workshop? Thank you, Rev. Lynda Smith

Listened to your talk "The I Word" - you do a fair job of expression - if you passed the bar you pledged to uphold our laws - "CRIMINAL" is more accurate. These people sneak in, get free food stamps, medical care, housing, birth their bastards for US citizenship. CRIMINAL! If you are UM, you have duty to uphold Social Principles, 68E -
". .our duty to abide by laws . .". Are you ignorant of law and official church policy?

Liz,
We have a mission Sunday scheduled for July 31 at Central United Methodist Church in Muskegon. We have supported JFON in the past and plan to do so in the future. WOuld it be possible for you to come and be in our pulpit that morning sharing stories of how JFON makes a difference in people's lives? Our services are at 8:30 am and 10:00 am. We would want you to be present at both services. We would take a special offering that morning for JFON. Please let me know as soon as you are able if this is possible on your schedule.

Thanks!

Good morning, Ms. Balck,
I'm a faculty member at Western Theological Seminary in Holland and also a somewhat lapsed JFON volunteer. One of my seminary responsibilities is to lead the seminar for students in the second year of our Doctor of Ministry program, all practicing pastors seeking to improve their skills.
This year I'm wanting to build into the seminar a group discussion related to 'public theology', one definition being how the church speaks to issues in the public arena. I have an excellent article for the group to read related to immigration and am wondering if you would be interested and/or available to come in to spend some time with us in conversation on this matter. The key question I'm interested in exploring is from your perspective what is the most effective way for the church to speak to immigration issues? How can biblical / theological language be transposed or foundational for discussion in the political questions.
The seminar will begin in mid-May; the ideal time, if you could come, would be May 18 or 19, but other dates around then could be negotiated also.
Let me know if this is of interest (by the way, you would receive an honorarium!). If you'd like to talk about it I can come over to GR or maybe see you when you're in Holland.
Cordially,
Paul Smith, Western Seminary
